The reticular formation is a part of the brain that is involved in awaking/sleeping cycle.(1)

Function

Reticular formation is a complex network of neurons and axons that is located throughout the brainstem. regulates consciousness, sleep, and wakefulness. (4)

Reticular formation sends nonspecific impulses throughout the cortex to "awaken" the entire brain. (5)

If Reticular formation is stimulated in a sleeping subject, Subject awakens.

If Reticular formation is stimulated in a wake subject , subject becomes more alert . If Inhibited or damaged, Subject shows impaired alterness , and increased NREM .(6)
